Coleby Loveness, who has been staff at The Home Course since early 2021, has entered the PGA program and will continue at the course in his new role.
Coleby played football for three years at Mount Vernon (Wash.) High School, serving as team captain all three years. He then played football for three years while attending Pacific Lutheran University, playing quarterback for the Lutes. During his senior year at PLU, he switched to golf, playing on the men’s team in the fall of 2022 before graduating.
While attending PLU, Coleby began working at The Home Course in the spring of 2021, starting out in the outside services, running carts, working the driving range. In high school, he had worked at Eaglemont Golf Course in Mount Vernon, and was drawn to working at a golf course again.
Coleby began hanging around the PGA pros at The Home Course, helping out where he could, and playing golf with them whenever he had the time. “I liked watching how they helped people enjoy the game, get better at it,” he says. “They help them ‘chase that feeling’ you get when you’re playing well. And that’s what I want to do, help people have that feeling.”
In April 2023 Coleby entered the PGA program, and is now serving as a B-8 second-assistant PGA professional. The program takes about three years to complete, and consists of classes, playing ability tests, and earned credits.
"I believe that anyone can practice enough to meet their standards of play in the game of golf, although the practice needs to be done on the correct mechanics/skills to see improvements. It takes an insane number of reps to get better at this game so it is important to set short and long-term goals and be patient with the process. Being a new instructor, I rely on past athletic experience to draw connections to the golf swing such as converting from a baseball swing or a former quarterback syncing up the lower body. Golf is meant to be FUN; anyone is more than welcome to come see me and have a great time while growing our love for this great game!"
